Which is more effective- pilates or yoga?

Question by summer_rain: Which is more effective- pilates or yoga?
I am looking to tone up- not exactly lose a great deal of weight because I am at a heathy wieght, but firm my body and maybe lose a couple of pounds.
So which gentle exercise is better at this? Any tips for starting out?

Try each and see which you like better…both are primarily for muscle toning and lenghtening, although yoga also gives you a lot of flexibility…I personally prefer yoga but like both, and there’s nothing at all wrong with variety…

Find a local class for each one and go a few times…you may strongly prefer one over the other, or want to do both…

Yoga is also a mind/spiritual experience and can really help you calm and center yourself…that’s not a focus of pilates and may or may not matter to you…

    For the most part, Pilates is a better choice if you are trying to get more toned, but there are forms of Yoga that will really work your muscles too. Look for Yoga names like Power Yoga or Fitness Yoga — those type of Yoga workouts will develop more strength. But you can never go wrong with Pilates, it gives you great looking abs, legs and butt!!!
